2020 Census

Census Partnership Web Badges_2A_v1.8_12.10.2018

The 2020 Census is currently underway and an accurate count is critical to our county.

When we all respond, we all benefit. When everyone is counted in the 2020 Census, our communities get the funding they need for things like health care, education, emergency services, and more.

If you live in the United States, you are required by law to complete the 2020 census. Be sure to count everyone who lives in your home on your 2020 Census form. This includes babies and young children, who are often missed in the census. Not counting newborn babies and children impacts support for programs such as children’s health insurance, hospitals, child care, food assistance, schools, and early childhood development.

Your responses to the 2020 Census are safe, secure, and protected by federal law. Your answers can only be used to produce statistics. They cannot be used against you by any government agency or court in any way—not by the FBI, DHS, or ICE.

Important Dates

Because of COVID-19 concerns, operations are being adapted or delayed to protect the health and safety of our staff and the public and make sure the same population is counted another way. The original schedule posted below has been adjusted.

March 12-20: Households will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail with detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail.

March 16-24: Households will begin receiving reminder letters.

March 26-April 3: Households that haven’t responded yet will receive a reminder postcard.

March 30-April 1: The Census Bureau will count people who are experiencing homelessness over these three days. As part of this process, the Census Bureau counts people in shelters, at soup kitchens and mobile food vans, on the streets, and at non-sheltered, outdoor locations such as tent encampments.

April 1: Census Day is observed nationwide. By this date, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. When you respond to the census, you’ll tell the Census Bureau where you live as of April 1, 2020.

April 8-16: Households that still haven’t responded will receive a reminder letter and paper questionnaire.

April 20-27: Remaining households that haven’t responded will receive a final reminder postcard before the Census Bureau follows up in person. NOTE: In-person visits have been suspended at this time.
