Prohibited Items in the Court-Secured Area

The court-secured area includes the courtrooms, District Attorney’s Office, Bathrooms 110A and 110B, Clerk of Courts, Register in Probate, the hallways adjacent to the courtrooms, the conference rooms in the court hallway area, the judge’s chambers, and the jury room(s).

The following items are prohibited from entering the court-secured area. 

Any individual can be searched at any time for those entering this area.

  • Knives, razors, pointed scissors, or other cutting devices, and edged/pointed instruments of any description
  • Guns, stun guns, or any object resembling a gun, including gun cases, magazines, holsters, and ammunition
  • Bludgeons, bats, batons, blackjacks, clubs, saps
  • Slingshots or slung shots (a slung shot is a flexible weapon loaded at one end, to be swung at another, such as a sock with a weight in one end)
  • Metal knuckles (aka brass knuckles, or any object that wraps around the fingers to enhance the blow of a fist)
  • Bows or arrows
  • Martial arts weapons
  • Defensive chemical sprays
  • Combustible gases or flammable liquids, including lighters
  • Incendiary devices, including flares and smoke bombs 
  • Explosives, Fireworks, or their components
  • Handcuff keys
  • Personal protection devices (chemical control agent, electronic control device, or other personal protection device)
  • Alcohol
  • Any item that is prohibited by law
  • Any item deemed a threat to security by court security staff

Exceptions 

The following items that might otherwise fit the descriptions listed above shall be allowed.

  • Common nail clippers
  • Medically prescribed medications

Anyone entering the court-secured area is prohibited from possessing the above items. Those excluded from the prohibition include on-duty law enforcement, transport, and correctional officers or those with specific court approval.

Anyone who violates this ordinance is subject to a forfeiture of up to $250 and immediate forfeiture of the item.
